It was essentially a World’s Fair, envisioned as a coming out party for the United States in the new century as a leader in fields ranging from fine art to manufacturing to space exploration (one attraction was an imaginative carnival ride sending attendees on a trip to the moon a full year before Georges Méliès’ landmark film of the same name). But it was sadly defined by a single event: President William McKinley’s assassination by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. This elevated Teddy Roosevelt to the presidency, which is one of the most consequential events of the 20th century, but also signaled an end to a dark and little-remembered era of America ruled by the robber barons and punctuated by our most overtly imperialistic acts – we essentially conquered the Philippines, Hawaii and Japan – of which McKinley was a major architect. It was also a bloody period where three American presidents were assassinated in just 36 years. They showed me places and people and ideas I’d have no access to otherwise, they taught me taste and style. But they also skewed my perception in unrealistic ways. I’ve been thinking lately that perhaps I was a bit too lost in that cinematic dreamworld and didn’t pay enough attention to the place I came from. That place, Effingham County, Georgia, is in the photos that comprise the background. They were taken 50 years before I was born but it didn’t look much different decades later when I was a teenager. It’s quite stark and bleak, but it’s inescapably a part of me. The interpretations of each card change somewhat over the ages from deck to deck, from reader to reader, but the Judgement or Aeon card has stayed fairly consistent in its depiction of rebirth, resurrection, self realization, transformation. The cards most commonly used today are the “Rider–Waite deck”, named after the men who commissioned and printed the cards. The deck has stayed relevant, though, because of its vibrant, fanciful illustrations by a woman of Jamaican descent named Pamela Colman Smith whose name has conveniently been left out of the story. Smith lived a singular life, mostly in London and Manchester, with stints in Brooklyn and Kingston, Jamaica. She was well known in the cultural circles of the time, acquainted with famous figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O’Keefe, Aleister Crowley, Bram Stoker (for whom she illustrated several projects, including the first edition of The Lair of the White Worm), and many more. I wanted to help resurrect Smith and her work a bit in this piece, and also reference other ideas and traditions from the golden age of the occult and spiritualism in which she lived. A while back, I visited the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and became totally obsessed with the over the top western wear popularized by stars like Porter Wagoner, designed primarily by the legendary Nudie Cohn and Manuel. The evolution of this clothing from something rugged and utilitarian intended for back-breaking work to being covered in sequins like a rhinestone cowboy seemed to speak to how American “tall tales” are invented. Last year I happened upon a cache of photos taken by the brilliant Toni Frissell on a Wyoming cattle ranch in the 50’s, many undeveloped until decades later, and was inspired to create a series of three pieces which contrast myth and reality, intended to be displayed as a triptych. I planned on using photos of both men and women in this series, but the women were absolutely magnetic so none of the men made the final cut!The central panel contrasts the documentary photography of Toni Frissell with one of the most instrumental figures in the creation and proliferation of the myths of the Wild West, Buffalo Bill Cody. “Buffalo Bill” was entirely an invention of Cody, a colorful raconteur who used his charm and striking looks to propel himself from the hard life of a frontier “Indian fighter” and buffalo hunter to show business as the ringmaster of a series of highly successful Wild West tours of the U.S. and Europe. These tours allowed many to see with their own eyes for the first time the cowboys and indians they’d read about in newspapers and dime-store novels, helping cement the highly fictionalized image of the era that persists to this day. What is known of Cody’s real story is much more complicated and bloody, but historians have had trouble parsing the fact from fiction because of a lifetime of tall tales. On the far right is Tom Mix, who starred in over 100 cowboy movies from the early days of film. His life spanned an interesting transitional period for these myths – a few decades after the “Wild West” era but a few decades before newspapers held entertainers to journalistic standards. Last year I learned how one of Christian Dior’s greatest triumphs – the unveiling of his first collection in February 1947, a watershed moment in fashion history – had been directly preceded by the most nightmarish events of his life. Not only had he just emerged from the soul-crushing Nazi occupation of France, but for nearly a year he was haunted by his inability to protect his beloved sister Catherine who had been imprisoned, tortured, and presumed dead in concentration camps because of her involvement with the French resistance. Catherine miraculously survived and lived to the age of 90. She devoted herself to flowers and fragrances, and was the inspiration for Macy’s Flower Show here in New York last year. I visited on the last day to take the photos and video in this series, when most of the flowers had begun to wilt but retained their beauty despite their imperfections. The title is the Vichy French replacement for “liberty, equality, fraternity”, translating to the very ominous (and increasingly familiar) “work, family, fatherland”. A few months ago, my wife and I took a walk around Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. If you haven’t been, you’ve probably seen it in movies or the cover of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It’s spooky but beautiful and scenic, and in the very hot summer the trees provide a thick, shaded canopy that makes it one of the nicest places to spend time in Savannah. We decided to find the grave of the great songwriter Johnny Mercer, and on our way back to our car a strange sight caught our eye. It was a grave covered in Florida Gators regalia, not something you often see in Georgia Bulldogs country. We walked over to check it out, and nothing really could’ve prepared me for whose grave it was: my own father’s, who I never met. I was raised the only child of a single mom. My father was never part of my life. When I was very little this didn’t really register, but as I saw how other kids lived with different types of families, I started asking questions. My mom never really seemed like she wanted to tell me all that much about him, other than his name. A handful of times she would abruptly share something, most memorably a newspaper article during my teen years about how he was struck by lightning not just once but twice. A few years ago I saw his obituary but had no idea where he was buried or much else about him. My mom is now deep into Alzheimer’s, anything she might’ve told me is long gone. There’s no way to know him more than this, it’s just a void. This piece is composed mostly of photos I took that day at his grave and those of his (and I guess my) ancestors who were buried in the same plot. Fred Koch did not come from money. Those billions came from Fred’s relentless quest for success, and he spent the 1920’s and 30’s building oil refineries in places his competitors wouldn’t go, like Russia during Stalin’s first five-year plan. He was recruited by a shadowy agent for Nazi Germany named William Rhodes Davis to build a refinery in Hamburg called EuroTank, and met personally with Hitler to receive his permission to build it. EuroTank provided much of the fuel for Hitler’s Luftwaffe and as such was a frequent target of Allied bombing raids; some of those bombing plans and photos of the factory are incorporated into this piece. At various times, prisoners from Auschwitz were brought in to repair the factory after these bombings. Fred Koch later became a founding member of the far right John Birch Society, an organization that furthered paranoid conspiracy theories about communist agents infiltrating all elements of American society; excerpts of his book A Business Man Looks At Communism and his correspondence with J. Edgar Hoover are also incorporated into the piece. These were images of a world largely frozen in time, vast expanses that still seemed wild and untamed, with religious temples rising out of the ground completely out of place with their surroundings but with their own striking, anachronistic beauty. These pieces are meditations on the imposition of civilization onto these wild frontiers, and a portrait of a world primed to rise up during the Russian Revolution shortly thereafter.
